Welcome to Edward Dent Watches and Clocks
Giant public clocks and turret clocks were only the beginning of Dent Watches, the most highly sought after British watchmaker in the world. Known the world ’round for the Big Ben masterpiece which stands proudly before Westminster’s Houses of Parliament, Dent’s previous and later achievements were no less important, and made with no less precision.
Big Ben, which was meant to be crafted by Dent’s founder, Edward John Dent, passed away before its completion, and what is known today as the most famous clock in the world was actually crafted by Dent’s son, also a master watchmaker, named Frederick Stephen Dent.
Before Ben, Edward J. Dent was charged with the duty of crafting the Standard Clock that stood at the English Royal Observatory until it was replaced in the mid 1940s by an electric clock. The Standard Clock of the Royal Observatory was the first in history to keep Greenwich Mean Time, known today as G.M.T.
